Empowering Young Leaders Through Interact

Interact clubs bring together young people ages 12–18 to develop leadership skills while discovering the power of Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self. Sponsored by Rotary clubs around the world, Interact clubs complete projects that support their local communities while also promoting international understanding and goodwill.

At Bozeman High School, the Interact Club continues to make a meaningful impact both locally and globally through service, fundraising, and leadership development. Supported by the members of the Bozeman Sunrise Rotary Club, approximately 30 student members participate in projects that encourage compassion, responsibility, and community involvement.

One of the club’s fundraisers took place each February with the sale of Valentine’s Day “Rose Grams.” Students purchased roses and notes for friends and classmates, with all proceeds supporting the club’s international service project. This year, funds were donated to Kafika House, an organization providing medical care and surgical support for children. One of the Interact officers previously volunteered with Kafika House and felt strongly about continuing to support its mission. The Bozeman Sunrise Rotary Club matched $250 of the funds raised, helping provide medical supplies, surgical tools, and post-operative care for children in need.

In October, Interact members organized another creative fundraiser by selling Halloween “Trick and Treats.” Students purchased candy and cards for fellow classmates, and Interact members dressed in costume to deliver the treats on Halloween. Proceeds from the fundraiser were donated to the Community Cancer Center in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Beyond fundraising, Interact provides students with opportunities to grow as leaders. Heidi Huber, Interact president, has been actively involved in Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), received one of the Bozeman Sunrise Rotary Student of the Year scholarships, and will serve as a counselor at RYLA camp this July.

Bozeman Sunrise Rotary members support the Interact Club by attending meetings, offering guidance and mentorship, matching fundraising efforts, and helping fund the Bozeman High School staff liaison who works closely with the students.

According to club advisor, M’Kenzie Elsberry, and Rotarians, participation in Interact helps students develop a broader perspective on service both locally and globally. Through projects, discussions, and leadership experiences, students gain a greater awareness of community needs while learning the importance of gratitude, teamwork, and giving back.

Through their dedication and enthusiasm, the students of Interact continue to demonstrate how young leaders can make a lasting difference in their community and beyond. (June 2026)
