BSRC Board Adopts RI Constitution
At its regular monthly meeting on September 13, BSRC’s board of directors voted to replace the club’s 2014 constitution with the standard Rotary International constitution. The reasoning behind this decision is simple. We have been in contravention of RI’s requirements for many years. Section 2.030 of RI’s bylaws states: “All clubs must adopt the standard club constitution, including any future amendments to it.” Changes resulting from adopting RI’s standard constitution will generally be minor and transparent to most of us. But there is one area where this action will be have a greater impact and be beneficial.
Article 8 of RI’s and now our constitution states, in part: “The club shall be composed of adult persons who demonstrate good character, integrity, and leadership; possess good reputation . . . and are willing to serve in their community . . .” Article 7 of our club’s previous constitution stated, in part, that a requirement of membership was that prospects must be “engaged as a proprietor, partner, corporate officer, or manager of any worthy and recognized business or profession . . .”
While this requirement may have served our club well in the past, it limited opportunities for younger persons who have not reached those professional levels from becoming members. Going forward, all potential members will still be vetted and recommended by the membership committee before being offered admission to the club. The membership committee and the board believe this less specific set of qualifications will encourage a more diverse membership in the long run without sacrificing the quality of members that Sunrise Rotary has enjoyed since its inception thirty years ago.
In the links below, you can read both our former and current constitutions. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to call or write Robb Miller. Thanks to all of you have continue to embody Rotary’s motto of Service Above Self.
